Children Helping Parents
Adult children often find themselves in the position of helping aging parents with their affairs. Sometimes they are able to encourage and assist with advance planning, while parents are still able to make decisions for themselves and sign legal documents. Sometimes adult children must help parents cope with a crisis.
Many families are concerned about the unwelcome possibility of a "negative inheritance". This may occur when children spend more to care for aging parents than they receive through inheritance. We understand the difficulties of this family conversation. Estate planning, however, is not about parents yielding control to children. It is about parents exercising control over what happens during periods of disability or after their death. Planning ahead is much easier and less expensive, in the long run, than dealing with the consequences of failing to plan. Ward Legal Group PC is ready to work with you and your parents, to review their estate planning needs, wishes and options. Some of the ways we can help, logistically, are making house calls to visit housebound parents, and keeping children who live at a distance engaged and informed to the extent parents authorize, through conference calls or otherwise.
Children also may wish to avail themselves of our Monadnock Senior Resource Guide, to learn what other local services may be available to help them help their parents. Click here to download this guide (PDF Format).
